Just like us grown-ups, children need to visit the dentist on a regular basis. While some parents think that childhood dentistry is less important because baby teeth are eventually going to be lost anyway, the reality is that tooth decay poses a significant health threat to children. Just as important, children need to learn appropriate oral hygiene habits from an early age. Dr. James Chen of The Cosmopolitan Dentist is an experienced pediatric dentist in El Segundo who has helped countless children, from toddlers to teens, get the best possible start on a lifetime of good oral health.
Visiting a Pediatric Dentist
Most dentists say they’re happy to treat children, but not all of them have the same level of experience working with young patients. After all, children obviously have their own special concerns with visiting the dentist and it takes an experienced pediatric dentist to ensure that dental appointments go smoothly. Dr. Chen has both the chairside manner and the gentle but effective touch to ensure that children’s oral health is fully protected and that they learn the right habits early on.
Outstanding Oral Healthcare that also Convenient
Being an experienced pediatric dentist, Dr. Chen also understands that parents in the El Segundo/Culver City/LAX/South Bay area are extremely busy people with often complicated schedules – and their kids are almost as busy with school and all kinds of extra-curricular classes and activities. That’s why he makes a point of working with parents to help them schedule appointments at times when it makes sense for them and their kids.
Performing Pediatric Dental Procedures
Children and adults often may contract many of the same dental problems and, as always, prevention is always the best way to go. For children, this means instruction in proper daily brushing and flossing as well as regular, ongoing cleanings and dental check-ups to prevent cavities, toothaches, and other problems. Even so, procedures are sometimes necessary.
There are a number of matters related to performing dental procedures on young children and pre-teens, and questions regarding the use of sedation are among the most challenging and complex. On the one hand, it’s important to be judicious in the use of medication on children but, at the same time, children who squirm or move around excessively may pose a problem.
Dr. Chen has dealt with this issue on many occasions and he knows what’s appropriate to use on children. Nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas, is an extremely mild and safe choice when utilized by a dental professional. In many cases, it’s more than sufficient but, for some treatments, particularly those on infants, other types of sedation may be required. Whatever the case, Dr. Chen will work closely with parents so that they understand every aspect of procedures before it happens.
Easing Children into Dentistry
Here at The Cosmopolitan Dentist, we suggest taking children to the dentist as early as possible for a number of reasons. Aside from fostering good oral hygiene and prevention of problems later on, it’s also a good idea to get children used to the environment of a dentist’s office very early.
Dr. Chen has taken a number of steps to ensure that his environment is as kid-friendly as possible. Our office uses warm, inviting colors and we keep age-appropriate toys and books on hand to help children feel at home.
We also believe in a gentle and low-key approach. Especially for visits with very young children, we take our cues from the child. If it becomes clear that an initial visit is too much for him or her, we’ll finish the work at a second appointment later on. We believe in letting young children adjust to visiting the dentist at their own pace.
