Missing teeth are both a serious health issue and the kind of cosmetic problem that can truly undermine a patient’s self-esteem and quality of life. Fortunately, Dr. James Chen and the entire team at The Cosmopolitan Dentist are here to provide the dental implants that have been shown to lead to the best results for patients in terms of health, appearance, and convenience. While traditional dentures and bridgework are definitely better than no teeth replacement, only implants can actually deal with the worst health impacts of missing teeth, particularly bone loss.
How are Dental Implants Placed?
The first step is a consultation with Dr. Chen, during which he will take a close look at the health of your mouth to make certain that it is ready for a dental implant procedure. He will check to make sure that the gums and jawbone are strong enough for a procedure, while also looking for any signs of cavities or periodontal issues.
Once Dr. Chen has established that an implant is appropriate and you and he have agreed on a course of treatment, the next step is to take an impression of your mouth. This allows the lab to create new teeth that will look natural and attractive when paired with your existing teeth. The next step is for the actual implant structure to be implanted in the gum line during a minor oral surgery performed by Dr. Chen. Next, temporary teeth will be added to the structure so that the patient can leave the office with an attractive set of temporary teeth.
Over roughly the following two months, the implant and the jawbone will fuse together. This is a crucial stage in the process, because this is how the implant actually prevents the bone loss, which can lead to the loss of additional teeth while also being associated with systemic health problems. Once the fusion has been complete, the patient will visit Dr. Chen’s office again to have his or her final set of prosthetic teeth added to the implants. For all intents and purposes, these implants will function just like real teeth so that you can participate in all of your normal activities – including eating your favorite hard or crunchy foods.
Since dental implants do not decay in the same way that a natual tooth does, you won’t have to worry about getting cavities on a tooth restored with a dental implant. However, it’s still important to brush and floss as you normally would, to ensure that the areas around and adjacent to the implant do not suffer from decay.
Caring for Dental Implants
Since dental implants perform just like real teeth, it’s probably not too surprising to learn that they are cared for in the same way you should care for your natural teeth. This means regular daily brushing and flossing. While it’s true that implants can’t get cavities, it’s nevertheless also crucial to maintain a schedule of regular dental visits and cleaning to protect the health of gums and adjacent teeth. The good news is that the success rate for dental implants is 98 percent so, in all likelihood, your new teeth should function well for the rest of your life.
